Day trips from Aix en Provence

I will be based in Aix en Provence for 10 days. (have family there, so free accommodation) I would love see some typical Provence villages, the French riviera, the Luberon... Can anyone recommend a rough itinerary? What are the things you liked most in Southern france?

I loved Cassis, and it is close to Aix. Will you have a car?

Thanks Andrea. Cassis looks beautiful and luckily has a train station.
I would prefer not to drive but it looks like the tourist office in Aix has many bus excursions.

It just happened that the day we went to Cassis it was market day. If you are interested in markets, you might want to see what day they have them in the locations you decide on and plan your day trips around them. If you don't have Rick's Provence and Riviera book I recommend you get it. It has a lot of good information about places to go and the logistics of how to get there. Please let us know what you come up with regarding planning day trips without a car. Many people prefer not to drive. I had a car last year in Provence, so it made it easier to just go where we wanted.

Personally I am nuts for the Roman antiquities. These can be found in odd places bu the biggies are arguably the Pont du Gard near Nimes, arenas and other structures in Arles and in Nimes, and the theater in Orange. You are kind of off to the side of these places, a good hour away at least. So if you wanted to see all of these you'd need to make several day trips. But probably what you ought to do is plot all your desired destinations on a map and see what fits together well, what works for you. Maybe you'll find one or two of these are on your route.
