Day Trip to Toledo

We will be in Toledo for just one day. We will hopefully arrive in Toledo a little after 10a and will be leaving from the train station around 4:20 in the afternoon. We figured we would see the Cathedral first thing and then maybe walk around and explore, possibly find a quick lunch and see the shops, etc. We are hoping to see maybe one more sight while there. We are considering the Santa Cruz Museum or the Victorio Macho Museum. Which would you choose? Anything else you would suggest that we consider?

Consider spending the night instead of doing Toledo as a day trip. EVERYONE does Toledo as a day trip, and - surprise! - from 10 am to 4 pm, the little streets are packed with crowds of tourists. Who could have imagined? Actually, it's very predictable. The train from Madrid is fast and easy. Leave Madrid mid-day so you arrive in Toledo mid-afternoon. You'll see the city transform before your eyes from a charming but annoyingly crowd-clogged tourist trap to a magical time machine that transports you back to the middle ages. The crowds disappear before the sun sets, and you'll have this amazing city almost to yourself for a few hours in the late afternoon & evening, and a short couple hours the next morning. Then the throngs of day-trippers will arrive again, and you can move on to Madrid, having had your way with the place. You end up spending the same amount of time there, you just split it across two days and one night. It's well worth it to arrange your time this way.

I you do decide to stay in Toledo, another reader suggested the following apartment. We have booked a stay for one night in May, so have not stayed there yet. Therese was helpful in arranging the apartment; Casa de los mozarabes <[email protected]>

Thanks for the tips! I wish we could spend one night in Toledo because I have heard the exact same thing that you mentioned. However, we are travelling with a 23 month old and we are moving her around 4 different European cities already, and it would be a lot to have to change locations for just 1 night. Any suggestions on which site you would choose besides the Cathedral? Also, how far away is the Victorio Macho Museum from the main plaza? Part of what I liked about the Santa Cruz Museum is that it is in the same square the bus would pick us up in....
