I wanted to do a day trip from Munich to Rothenburg in Sept. I know I can take the train to the Rothenburg bahnhoff, but is there a bus or something that I can take to go to the old city and the shopping areas or is the only way walking? If I had to walk, does anyone know how far it is?
take the train its only a ten minute walk to your left to the old city. if you want to shop turn right out of the train station and in 2 minutes you will see the shopping center.
You will find everything within walking distance in the walled city of Rothenburg. The whole town in compact. No busses in town.
The old city is all there is. I would guess that everything from one city limit to another is less than half a mile.
The walk from the train station to the city center is less than 15 minutes. The train ride from Munich to Rothenburg ob der Tauber is at least 2.5 hours each way. It is a long day trip if you do not intend to spend an overnight.
The city of Regensburg also shows its medieval heritage and it is much closer. Plus I would say that it has a more complete shopping area, though less tourist oriented.
