Day trip to Oberammergau and Mittenwald from Munich

Has anyone been to these places from Munich as a day trip traveling by train? I would like to either one or both as a day trip from Munich. I seen pictures and both places look very picturesque. Can this be done on train or does a bus need to taken and is one day ok to see it?

I did not do them as a day trip, but we did visit both places. They are kind of redundant- cute frescoed houses in picturesque areas. I would go to Mittenwald- it is absolutely gorgeous and easy to get around.

You could throw a rock in the Bavarian Alps and hit any number of similar towns. The scenery in each town is similar, but Oberammergau has a few more "tourist" sites, like the monastery and it sits closer to Linderhof.

Tom, so do you also recommend Linderhof. Is that close by to Mittenwald and Oberammergau? Also do you think that maybe just choosing one of these two would be enough? Is there a direct train there from Munich?

Linderhof is close to Oberammergau. I would describe it as a micro version of Versailles. If that interests you, go for it. I've only driven there, but I believe there is a bus connection from Oberammergau.

And yes, I think choosing one or the other would probably be enough.

You can get to Mittenwald by direct train from Munich via Garmisch-Partenkirchen. To get to Oberammergau, you take the same train but change in Murnau for a train to Oberammergau. From Oberammergau, it is a short bus ride to Linderhof (www.linderhof.de).

If you use a €28 Bayern-Ticket, all of this transportation, train and bus, for up to five people for the entire day, will be covered.

I think it is usually Ludwig's palace at Herrenchiemsee which is compared to Versailles. Linderhof is really small.

I think that, including a nice leisurely lunch (~1 hr), I spent about 4 hours at Linderhof. I got in a tour of the palace shortly after arriving, walked around the grounds a little, went back to the entrance for lunch at the Gasthof, then went back to the palace area, to the Grotto, for a tour of it too.

Lily, you can find train and bus schedules on the German Rail website.

For help using the site, go here.

For Mittenwald, put in "post/bahnhof, mittenwald" as the destination.

Use "Linderhof Forsthaus, Ettal" for Linderhof.
