Anywhere along the Costa del Sol from Torremolinos to Estepona is a good place to get a tour to Tangiers. They leave pretty early in the morning, so you'll have to stay over a night before and after...there's no way you can do it in a day from Madrid. You could, of course, rent a car and do it yourself. But, with tour prices 65-70 Euro (including lunch), it's a good way to make your first trip to Tangier (ferry cost alone is 56 Euro round trip). Do a google search for "tangier tours" or something similar, and about a billion tour companies will pop up.

John, you might think of spending both nights -- the one before and the night of your Tangier tour -- in Tarifa. The ferry from Tarifa is very convenient, within walking distance of hotels. If you take the full 8-hour tour of Tangier, you will be pooped when you return to Tarifa. Tarifa has lots of fun restaurants to relax in after returning, before falling into bed.

RS says that Tangier is sort of a waste, albeit interesting, and not very authentic- Has anyone been to Rabat, and is it easy to do a day trip there from Tarifa? Also, for 2 mid-twenties women-- are safety concerns something to worry about in this part of Morocco?

Sarah....Rabat is about 300 kilometers (almost 200 miles) by road from Tangiers, so it's not a destination for a day trip from Tarifa. It's not that Tangiers isn't "authentic," it's just that it's been an international city, under control of one European power or another, or several, for a couple of hundred years, so it is much more "cosmopolitan" than other cities in Morocco. You can find many companies in southern Spain that will have multi-day tours into Morocco...Rabat, Marrakech, Fez, etc.

Check out RS's blog. He was in Morocco in May. He wrote a nice blog how Tangier has changed and all for the better. We just got back from there. We stayed one night in Tarifa, where we were able to leave our luggage, one night in Tangier and then back to Tarifa. The ferry does go from Algecerias but it is a 2 1/2 hr ride. The ferry from Tarifa takes only 35 minutes. I do recommend you hire a guide. He can take you places you would not go on your own. We toured with Aziz and it was wonderful.
