Day Trip to Mallorca from Barcelona?

We are going to be in Barcelona in late September/Early October. We were thinking of taking a day trip (flying; the ferry is too slow) to Mallorca and renting a scooter to see the island, then visiting the Palma Cathedral. Has anyone done this? Is it doable? Is it realistic to see enough of the island in one day?

Sounds like my idea of hell on earth, and a complete waste of a day that you could otherwise enjoy in/around Barcelona, a lovely city with plenty to see and do, but I suppose there's no accounting for tastes. I suspect you would spend virtually all of your day dealing with getting there and back, and almost no time actually being there.

I don't know if it's even physically possible (check the flight schedules), but there must be some strong appeal to spending all day dealing with airports and merely touching down on Mallorca, tagging the ground, maybe taking a picture to prove you were there, and then getting back on the plane. Not my cup of tea. Maybe you just really want to get out of Barcelona very badly?

In a word- No!!

If you'd like a change of pace from Barcelona, then why not visit Girona? it's on the coast and is easily accessible by both bus or train.

The problem with Mallorca is that its absolutely overrun with the worst kind of tourist. Yes, it has beaches, but you'd probably be happier finding a beach on the mainland-- unless you're into large groups of trashed pasty young men bachelor partying.
