Day trip to Hallstatt from Salzburg??

Hello all... my husband and I will be in Salzburg in April (we're actually just stopping for a brief amount of time..1-2 nights) on our way from Prague to Italy. We really want to see Hallstatt as well and are debating if we should stay in Salzburg for one night and then Hallstatt for one night OR if we should stay in Salzburg for two nights and then do a day trip to Hallstatt...??? Any suggestions? Thank you!

erin, last december my austrian cousin and i drove to hallstatt from linz in n austria, near the donau river. took about an hour through the snow, so not far by car. suggest stay in hallstatt at least a nite, wonderful low key beauty of lake mountain setting. you can rail also from salzburg, check at station for route, schedule, and connect across lake at townstation by lake ferry to hallstatt main town. several hotels are listed in quide books, even rick's, though not sure list would be in his newer books.

Erin,

Given the very short period of time you'll be in Salzburg, taking a day trip to Hallstatt would probably be your best choice. There are two methods you could use.

First, you could take a day trip with Bob's Special Tours, who are based in Salzburg (listed in Rick's book). They provide all transport arrangements via Minivan from Salzburg to Hallstatt. Check their web site for details and prices. The one disadvantage of arriving by road, is that you'll miss the incredible "first view" of the town from across the lake (although you could take a short trip on Stefanie just to have a look). I'm not sure if the day tours allow enough time to visit the Salt Mine above town? If that is possible, hopefully you'll have time to stop at RudolfSturm for a "cool one" (a large Castle on the hill above Hallstatt on the way to the Salt Mine tour). The view is incredible!

You could also travel to Hallstatt via train, which involves at least one change at Attnang-Pucheim. You'll arrive at the small (unmanned) station across the lake from Hallstatt and will have to use Stefanie to reach the town (€1 each way as I recall). Check the bahn.de website for travel times and other details.

At least one night in Hallstatt would be nice, but under the circumstances it looks like this will have to wait until your next visit.

Good luck and happy travels!

stay in salzburg for two nites and do a day trip to hallstat as there is not much to do there. for good and cheap accommadation in salzburg check out pension elisabeth which is 10 min. from train station. hallstat can be seen in about 4-6 hrs if you really want to go there. for rooms in hallstatt go to www.hallstatt.net pension elisabeth in high season 40-49 euros but book asap.

Hi. If any of you have been to Rudolfsturm, do you mind telling me what is the pricing is, e.g. how much do the mains course on average? I am thinking of having a nice lunch there when I go to Hallstatt in June.

Thanks!

Thank you Erin for asking this question as I'm in a similar planning stage for a July trip. You'll have to let me know what you decide and how things worked out, but I'm leaning towards spending a night.

I can tell you that so far I got a list from TripAdvisor to begin researching. I've written to 5 local B & B's in Hallstatt. 1 has responded with a need for a 7 night stay (pay for 6 is their selling point. They say they're too old to do shorter stays other than the honeymoon suite). Waiting on the others.

Still pondering how to arrive (train vs. drive). We will have a car. Might leave it in Salzburg.

Hi Erin (and Gary),

I'd spend 2 nights in Salzburg and day trip to Hallstatt. While Hallstatt is nice and the setting is great, it is very small and easy to see in a couple of hours. It actually took us about 15 to 20 minutes to walk from one end to the other. We were there in late October and it was VERY quiet. Don't know how April would be.

Gary, the drive is easy and through beautiful countryside. It's less than 1:30 from Salzburg.
