We are planning a day trip to Carcassonne from Montpellier in April 2014 and are trying to decide whether to drive or take the train. We will have a car available but wondered about the parking situation.
Is parking a hassle and how close to le cite can you park? Are taxi's available at the Carcassonne train station and do they take you into le cite? Thanks for any sharing of experience.
There is a taxi rank just outside the station. They can't drive into the Cite, but can get you up to the gate. I've never seen anything but delivery/work vehicles inside the walls. There's parking out your ears just across the street outside the main gate. If you stick to the freeways, it takes about an our and a quarter and it's not that scenic. The tolls are under twenty bucks each way, I think. I've never ridden the train. If you have a choice of timing, make it as late in the day as you can, even if it means missing the stupid castle. The best cassoulet is probably in the gate, take the first left and up the hill. It's the joint on your right that doesn't have much of a view. The place on the left with outdoor patios stinks.
