We are spending time in Trier this June and would like to spend a day in Luxembourg. Any suggestions? Is Lux City worth a visit? Has anyone been to Diekirch or Vianden? We will have a rental car.
Thanks!
We tried the reverse last year, using Vianden as a base and Trier as a day trip. There is not a lot to do in Vianden except relax and enjoy the scenery. But is is a good base for day trips to places like Trier, Bastogne and Lux City. The hilltop castle dominates the old town, and a small river makes the place even more scenic and peaceful. I will send you a link for pictures through a private message. We stayed at the Hotel Petry, which has two restaurants serving good German and French dishes plus great pizza. It would be a good daytrip from Trier, but it is most scenic at night. I don't recall Diekirch specifically but it was one of several scenic towns enroute to other destinations. The reason we chose Vianden instead of Trier was that I had been to Trier a couple of times before but neither of us had been to Vianden. We needed to relax at that stage of our trip, anyway. Luxemburg City has its good points, but there are so many other places in the area worth visiting that I would not take time away from them to visit it.
Yes, I've been to all and appreciate all 3. Do you find WWII and the Battle of the Bulge interesting?
Hi Angela. I've only been to Lux City and wanted to go to some other places in Luxembourg but only had a day and half in the country. I agree that Lux City isn't that interesting but if you decide to go, there are some cool places to visit. I liked the casemates (tunnels dug into the cliffs around the Ville Basse) and the Museum of Modern Art. The cost to visit the casemates is 2 euros for an adult and the museum was at most 4 euros for an adult (this was in summer 2010). We also went down to the Ville Basse (Low City) and walked around the gardens. The Ville Haute (High City) has shopping and restaurants.
We really enjoyed Trier....stayed there and took an early morning train to Luxembourg City. There is the American Cemetary just a few mile outside of LC where General Patton is buried. Well worth the trip.
Two years ago we took a day trip from Bastogne, Belgium to Luxembourg. We spent the morning in Diekirch - primarily at the Battle of the Bulge museum - and the afternoon in Vianden - primarily at the castle. The museum was fantastic (we are WWII history buffs) and we loved the castle as well. The driving was very easy, and it was a perfect day trip for us. I highly recommend it.
The Landes Museum is well worth seeing in Trier.
A few years ago, we were staying in Bernkasel-Kues and drove over to Trier for a visit. After Trier, we continued into Luxembourg to Echternach. It is a lovely little town and you could certainly see it easily from Trier. We too loved Vianden. Sounds like the secret has gotten out.
I agree that the American Military Museum is wonderful. Patton is buried there along with a couple of the characters from the Band of Brothers video. (Gee, I hate to refer to them as characters. They were heroes.)
We visited the cemetary on a different day than Vianden and Diekirch. It would be an awfully long day to do all three.
Thanks for all the tips, everyone. And thanks for sharing pics, too! We are definitely planning to visit Vianden and the casemates in Lux City. Looking forward to experiencing a new corner of Europe.
