Day trip ideas from Nice into the French Alps.

Staying in the Nice, France area for 4 - 5 days. Does anyone have recommendations for day trips to the Alps from this location. Recommendations via train? and via car? The trip will be mid-September 2010. Looking for site seeing opportunities.

Thanks,

That is good information and exactly what I am looking for. It doesn't have to be in the heart of the Alps just something to get a taste. We will be catching another part of the Alps through the Dolomites later on in the trip.

Thank you.

Sospel is not in the alps, it is not near the alps. The terrain surrounding it does not resemble the alps. The architecture is not alpine. The vegetations is not alpine, it is, in fact, located in an olive-growing region. It has probably never seen snow more often than Nice has.

It happens to be located in the Alpes-Maritimes Department. So is the riviera.

If you want to see what most people consider the alps in France, you generally need to get at least north of Gap into the Hautes Alpes.

A great drive if you have the time and inclination is the N85 "Route Napoleon" from Cannes up to Gap, through Grasse, Castellane, and Sisteron. Gap is definitely alpine - they're trying to get the Winter Olympics in 2018.

It's called the Route Napoleon because it follows the route Napoleon took in 1815 when he returned from exile in Elba.

We've done it all the way from Nice to Grenoble. It's a great drive even though some parts - mostly north of Gap - are a bit white-knuckle.
