My wife and I will be visiting Portugal the Lisbon area in Oct. 2012. We've pretty much firmed up our travel schedule for the major sites we want to see.. We have a one day window...Our wish list for the one day: To visit a "picturesque" fishing village complete w/ unique fishing boats and if possible a fish market... Criteria: A) Must be no more then 2 hr. train / bus trip from lisbon. B) Hopefully include other sites, i.e. fort, sea coast, church, museum, etc. Note: Town dosen't have to include all of these sites. We've been told Cascais may fit the bill, however would like to consider some other options.... Any suggestions? Thanks! T. Scatchard
You want to go to Nazaré, not Cascais. We just had a great 2 week Rick Steves' tour of Portugal. We took a train ride to Cascais. it is not a picturesque fishing village. We also visited Nazare. It fits the bill for what you want in my opinion. From Lisbon take the Rede expressos-bus from the bus station at Av. Duque de Avila (nearest metro Saldanha). Approximately 2 hours to the central bus station in the center of Nazaré. Price should be about 10 Euros. Be sure to take the funicular up to Sitio for a great view. Our group had a great meal at the Riba-Mar Restaurant.
Agree that Nazare is the place to go. It has sea coast and Sitio has the church as well as an interesting legend. The unique fishing boats are pretty much a thing of the past and the harbor is now on the outskirts of the town but it is picturesque with great meals.
Nazaré, Ericeira or Peniche would fit your requirements.
To the south of Lisbon I would recommend Portinho de Arrabida.
Definately Nazare!
