Day Trip from Stuttgart

Hi,
Is it possible to go to Baden-Baden for the day from Stuttgart? What other day trips would you recommend?

Yes, it's possible. Also you could visit Heidelberg/Schwetzingen for a day, Tübingen (a mus-see IMO), the Hohenzollern castle (private castle of the last German emperor), Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Würzburg and even Munich.

Thanks for the informantion.
It sounds like you could day trip to quite a few places. How about Dachau and Nurmberg? Reason asking is I would like to make this a home base and then take day trips instead of spending 2 nights here and 2 nights there. This is our first time to Germany and I don't want to feel rushed doing things.

Pick just about any area of Germany and there are many things to see in that general area. It would frustrate me to day trip to Nürnberg, Munich (Dachau), etc. from Stuttgart when there is much to see in the immediate area. You might spend all of your time traveling. It would seem better to move to those locations or to focus on Stuttgart & Baden-Württemberg.

Trip Advisor has a forum devoted to Stuttgart that might be helpful to finding things in the immediate area. Look for posts by marcopolko, who lives in Stuttgart and likes to write about it:

Strasbourg, France is a nice day trip.

The palace at Ludwigsburg is also worth seeing, as it is quite similar to Versailles and the gardens there are beautiful as well. You can take public transport to Ludwigsburg.

For Nuernberg or Munich, I might be tempted to base for a few days in someplace in Bavaria, like Nuernberg, Munich, Wuerzburg, Augsburg or Ingolstadt. You could also see Rothenburg obT from there.

There are many thing to see from Stuttgart. You can go to Pforzheim and take the train to Calw, home of Herman (Steppenwolf) Hesse, or to Bad Wildbad, which has a nice spa if you don't mind public nudity. You can also take the train to Freudenstadt (change in Ettingen im Gäu). I can also suggest going to Ulm and climbing (600') to the top of the world's highest gothic church steeple for a great view (on a clear day all the way to the Alps).

I agree with the suggestions of Tuebingen and Hohenzollernburg in Hechingen. Note, if you go to Hechingen, check the schedules on the Bahn carefully. There is one bus to the castle in the late morning (meets the train from Stuttgart) and one bus back to the train station in the late afternoon. Otherwise, it's a long walk. Or take a taxi from the Hechingen town square.

We went to Ludwigsburg and toured palace.I was very surprised how many rooms we visited on the tour. There are gardens but we did not get ticket for them. We had a Stuttgart card and train was covered and discount to Palace. Also Esslingen can be reached by sbahn cute old town and winery. Also Mercedes Benz Museum Stuttgart was interesting antique cars, trucks, racing cars, small planes restored.

One-way train ride from Stuttgart to Dachau is 2:40 hrs. By car it's just 2 hours one-way.To Nuremberg (Nürnberg in German) it's 2:10hrs by train and also just 2 hours by car.

I was just in Munich, and I saw Dachau. It was educational, but IMO, after spending more than 2 weeks total in Munich, there are better things to spend your time on in Munich. I certainly wouldn't spend 4-5 hours round trip just to see Dachau.
