Myself and some friends are spending a week in the San Pedro /Puerto Banus area of Spain. We would like to visit somewhere really nice for a day. One of us in confined to a wheelchair and we have booked a special taxi with a hoist for the wheelchair for one day. The only idea we have come up with so far is to visit Gibraltar which some have already visited and, in any event, it would not seem to be the most interesting place for a visit. Please, please, would welcome some suggestions.
Aine....you could visit Ronda....wonderful town over a massive gorge inland. It's right up highway A-376 (or A-397, depending on which map you look at...Spain seems to change highway numbers on a whim) from San Pedro. It's a windey road, but a nice journey...under an hour with any luck. If you don't want to go that far into the interior, you can go to one of the true white villages....Mijas Pueblo, just north of the A-7 from Fuengirola, about half an hour away from you. Just into the mountains, it has magnificent Mediterranean views, and all sort of sights to see.
Norm, Thanks for response. Unfortunately, we visited Ronda a few years ago and, I agree with you, it is a beautiful place. Also visited Mijas. Someone mentioned that there was a vineyard worth visiting, which also has a lovely restaurant, not too far away.
How about Nerja -- a nice coastal town, and a fairly easy drive up the beach from Marbella. Also, if you see something that looks nice along the way, you can just stop there.
On another subject, Spain is a long way from being truly wheelchair accessible, but I've never had a problem getting a wheelchair cab when needed (in Seville, not sure about the rest of the country). When you call the cab company to order a cab, just ask for "un taxi para menosvalidos". You can also ask any cab driver to use his radio to call for a car with a lift.
Enjoy the trip.
Nerja's a great idea! Another nearby spot, on the way to Nerja, is Velez-Malaga, just off the Mediterranean autoroute. Go early on a Thursday, when the town market is in full swing. There are tons of vinyards around Velez, so some of them must be associated with restaurants.
