Day trip from Paris to Aisne-Marne

My husband wants to visit the American WWI cemetery Aisne-Marne outside of Paris. Has anyone done this? We are not renting a car so will have to take the train to Chateau Thierry I think.....just want to know how difficult this would be to get back and forth.

Thanks Ed. Yes that is the place I was talking about. I figured we would need to catch the train so it looks like we could take a taxi from the train station and back again. I appreciate the info.

I think of it as the Belleau Wood cemetery, if that's the one you mean.

I've only been there by car.

There have to be fairly frequent trains from Paris (Gare de l'Est probably) to Chateau Thierry. I know of no bus, nor have I seen anything but tour buses (route unknown) in the parking lot. I could well be wrong regarding buses.

The cemetery is about five or six miles northwest of Chateau Thierry. I've seen taxis that appeared to be waiting for an chance return fare rather than waiting for somebody they'd dropped off for a while.

All the foreign cemeteries are run by the American Battle Monuments Commission (abmc.gov might have better information). There's always staff available to help you find grave locations when the cemetery is open. If I remember correctly, all ABMC sites are open on foreign holidays and close only a couple days a year (Christmas and something ?)

Until Tim chimes in with his infallible information, I'd guess train fares might run about twenty-five euros per person round trip and maybe another twenty euros for the cab rides. It should be no more than a half-day project.

Not much, but it might get you started.

Ed is absolutely correct. There are hourly non-stop regional trains from Gare de l'Est to Chateau-Thierry that make the trip in 45 minutes. They depart at 35 minutes past the hour and the fare is €14.40 each way.

There also are hourly regional trains that depart at 50 minutes past the hour and make multiple stops. They make the trip in 65 minutes.

Hi, Sherri. My husband and I visited this cemetary last September. It is very beautiful and perfectly maintained. I think we were the only ones there, which was kind of nice. I like to walk among the graves and read the names and think about the sacrifice these boys made.

We rented a car and drove there from Normandy. I think you can walk to part of the battlefied from the cemetary if I recall correctly -- it is up the hill behind the memorial. We stopped in the TI in Chateau Theirry before we headed to the battlefield.

Thanks everyone for your replies. My husband is not one for crowds which is why we picked this one to see. I appreciate the info on the train schedules and costs. Helps us budget what we want to see.
