I am wondering if it is possible to do a day trip from Munich to Fussen and Linderhof. Ideally, my thoughts are to head out early morning from Munich by train to Fussen and hop on the bus to Hohenschwangau. We want to tour Hoehnschwangau, but do not want to tour Neuschwanstein as we have heard the tour might not be worth it. After touring Hoehnschwangau and maybe grabbing lunch in Fussen, we would like to make our way to Linderhof (i believe we have to go by bus?) and tour Linderhof Palace. We would like to then grab dinner in Linderhof before heading back to Munich. I am not sure how to get back to Munich from Linderhof. Is this itinerary possible? Is there a better way to see these places? We are young,do not mind walking around, or travelling late into the evening/early morning. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!
If at all possible just spend the night in Horn Schwangau right at the castles. You can easily do day trips from there. It's a beautiful little area with lots of bikes paths and cows and goats grazing in the pastures. There are some very nice hotels and B&Bs dotted around. It's an excellent place to spend some time.
"not want to tour Neuschwanstein as we have heard the tour might not be worth it." I would not agree with that assessment. The bus to/from Linderhof passes through the Oberammergau Bahnhof. From Oberammergau there are trains to Murnau, which is on the main line from Garmisch-Partenkirchen to Munich. You can also catch a bus from Oberammergau or Ettal to Oberau and take the train from Oberau to Munich. You can get schedules, including the buses, from the German Rail (Bahn) website. Linderhof closes at 6 PM. There are buses leaving at 5:55 and 6:56. There is a Gasthaus with a nice restaurant right at the entrance to Linderhof. Hohenschwangau opens for tours, I believe, at 9 AM, so you will have 9 hours for the entire tour or both castles. The bus between Hohenschwangau and Linderhof takes about 3 hours, so you have 6 hours at both castle. Both castles have tours that take less than an hour, but when I was at Linderhof, I spent most of a day, including walking around the grounds and seeing the Grotto. I'd be inclined to make the trip in the opposite direction, since there are far more places for dinner in Füssen than at Linderhof. Also, the last bus from Linderhof is at 6:56 PM. You could go back to Oberammergau for dinner; trains run from there back to Munich until almost 11.
Hello Kate. I recommend that you inquire at the EurAide office in Munich about a day trip in a tour bus from Munich to Linderhof and Neuschwanstein. It includes 30 minutes at the town Oberammergau. You said you heard the tour of Neuschwanstein might not be worth it. I was there. I think Neuschwanstein looks better on the outside than on the inside. But I do not think the inside of Hohenschwangau is better than the inside of Neuschwanstein. Hohenschwangau is a small castle, I think it is not great.
