My husband and I will be staying in Munich for a few days next week and would like to take a day trip during one of them. We will be visiting Salzburg prior to arriving in Munich, and we've narrowed our options down to three - we're torn between Rothenburg, Nuremberg and Mittenwald. I've heard wonderful things about each but do not want to try to cram too much in one day. Any suggestions would be great! Thanks!
Having been to all three, I would have to vote for Rothenburg. Just don't go to the Christmas Shop, the C & P Museum, etc. Walk the wall, visit the museum in the tower, note how they fortified the gates, the natural weak points in the wall, observe how the lanes wandered aimlessly. Touristy as Rothenburg is, it's still a good example of a 14th century town. Of the other two, I don't think there is much in Mittenwald. It's a small town, scenic, but filled mostly with gift shops and restaurants, not much more. I enjoyed the castle in Nürnberg. Unfortunately I was not there long enough to see some of the Nazi sites. Nürnberg is a little too big for my tastes.
Hi Lindsay, That's a tough call. We've never been to Nurnberg, but love both Mittenwald and Rothenburg. We spent 2 nights in Rothenburg and 7 nights (between 2 trips) in Mittenwald. Between these two, it depends on what you'd like to see. These are two very different places, so hard to compare one to the other. If you want to visit a beautiful old walled town, Rothenberg. Highlights here for me were the Tilman Riemenschneider 500 yr. old wood carved masterpiece in St. Jacobs church and the Nightwatchman Tour (at 8pm). If you prefer an extremely charming village in the Alps, Mittenwald. The Karwendelbahn, right from Mittenwald, will take you up into the mountains. Mittenwald is right out of a postcard. www.worldisround.com/articles/338869/index.html www.worldisround.com/articles/324763/index.html Paul
if you hit a market day in nurnberg it can be pretty busy and fun for a day trip, but otherwise rotheenburg seems to have more stuff to see and easier to navigate. you can't do both in a day trip, not enough time.
