Tony, While it might be feasible, it wouldn't allow much time at either place so the effort wouldn't be worth it (IMO).

Even with a rental car I don't think it's possible. If you only have one day you should pick the one you want to see the most.

It's not advisable. You would have to choose one. I found Nueschwanstein to be a little disappointing. It's really not that large of a castle, but the scenery in Southern Bavaria is breathtaking. I just like to rent a car and ramble from town to town in the area.
