Can you recommend a day trip from Lausanne ? (Other than Chateau de Chillon or Geneva). What do you think of the small town Echallens ? (a narrow gauge train goes to it north from Lausanne). I will be in Switzerland during warm weather.

Gruyere is a good choice. In addition to its cheese factories, it is also the home/museum of SiFi artist H.R. Giger. He designed the creatures in the Aliens movies. In a neighboring town you can also take a tour of the Cailler-Nestle chocolate factory.
