My wife and I will be based in Amsterdam for three days in August. Two days will be spent in Amsterdam itself while the third day will be a day trip outside of the city. Which is a better day trip- a trip to Delft, or a trip to the Waterland towns of Edam, Volendam, and Marken? Your guidance is appreciated, thanks!
Can't speak for the Waterland towns as I've never been to any of them, but Delft is well worth a day trip from Amsterdam
Delft. Its an easy train ride from Amsterdam Central Station. We stay there now instead of Amsterdam because it is less expensive. Delt!
I can't say which is "better" since we didn't go to the Waterland towns, but we considered the same choice last year as a day trip from Haarlem. I mainly wanted to see the cheese day market in Edam, but when I found out it's only held on Wednesdays July/Aug (we went in Sept), we decided on Delft as a stop to The Hague. Delft was lovely.
we did the waterland towns by bus this past april. i really enjoyed it , my wife thought it was just ok. wante d to do delft just ran out of time. i thought the waterland towns were nice littel danish villages. :):)
Thanks for all of your advice. My wife prefers small towns so this will be a difficult decision! I'm sure we will be happy with whatever option we decide to do.
I have fond memories of renting a bike and riding through Waterland. The small towns a very charming and lush with flowering plants. I was able to ride from central Amsterdam to Marken and back in an afternoon.
Been to both and enjoyed both. really depends on what you would prefer. Waterland seems more cute , very old world holland, villages; while Delft is a small town with mediaeval center sqaure (with cafes), canals, and of course the visit to the delft factory. We walked to the fatory with my ageing parents without any effort Delft is an easy trip on your own by frequent trains from Amsterdam
