So we will be visiting Caen end Sept/1st Oct - we are basing ourselves there as we want to visit some of the Canadian war memorials, take a trip to Mont St Michel, and are catching the ferry to Portsmouth to visit my sister. We didn't plan on renting a car...too much hassle and $$...and I was checking into some tours to MSM - but I've seen some amazing photos at night and would like to see it at least at dusk, but I have feeling that the daytours are long gone by then. So...does anyone have a suggestion of either a good company for a day trip there that would maybe stay a little later in the evening, or should we rely on train/bus combo to get there...if anyone has done the train bus, can you let me know a little more about the particulars...thanks all!
Direct trains from Caen to Pontorson (the station closest to Mont-Saint-Michel) depart at 07:13 and 14:13. It's a two hour ride. There is bus service between the train station and MSM. If the bus schedule doesn't fit well with the train schedule, you can take a taxi. It's an 8.5 km ride. The last train back to Caen departs at 17:49. The sun will set around 19:30.
I was a little afraid of that...so may have to seriously think of renting a car for a day, or perhaps there are private tours you can get? Hmmm...maybe I'll try some of my couchsurfing prowress and find someone who'll take us for some gas and a meal!
