We (parents + 3 pre-teens) will be basing day trips out of Zurich for 3 days prior to traveling to Italy. We are going to take a boat over to Stein en Rhein and go to Luzern another day. We are looking for a day-train trip either to Germany or France for the day--can someone recommend a town near the Swiss border that would be interesting to visit? thanks, Elaine

Mulhouse in France or Frieburg in Germany are both interesting for a day.

Any place on Bodensee would be nice. Konstanz is nice. Mainau is close to Konstanz. Lindau is gorgeous although a bit far. Take the ferry across from Romanshorn, CH, to Friedrichshafen, to the Zeppelin Museum.

You can day trip by ICE to Freiburg (and Black Forrest), Baden-Baden (Spa town, very beautiful, also Black Forrest), Karlsruhe, to Stuttgart, Singen (Hohenzollern Castle, last German emperor (Kaiser)), Konstanz and then cruise to Friedrichshafen (home of all the huge Zeppelins from the 20s and 30s, great museum right by the port), Mainau island (chateau, gardens)... so many options.
