Day hikes from Munich or Salzburg

We would like to do some day hikes in the Munich and Salzburg area in May. We will be traveling by train, so places we would have to have a car to reach would not be helpful. Any ideas on scenic hikes or walks close to town?

Exploring the Englischergarten within Munich can occupy several hours of your time. If you want to try something more ambitious, you could try hiking up the Zugspitze. Take the train to Garmisch-Partenkirchen (or better yet, stay a few nights there!), then take the Zugspitzebahn to Eibsee. From here, you can start your hike up the mountain. Or, you can hop on the cogwheel train to the station on the upper slopes, and make the shorter hike to the summit, although there's still probably too much snow in May for this option.

Hi Diane,
In Salzburg, directly across the Salzach river from the Festung (castle on the hill) is a mountain called Kapuzinerberg (Capuchin mountain). You reach the top via a road which intersects Linzergasse (you pass through an historic arch) which leads past stations to the cross to the monastery. Continue beyond the monastery on a path through a beautiful beech forest to the top where you will find a small historic Schlößli (fortress) with a restaurant and refreshment garden.
Another worthwhile hike is to Wasserspiele Hellbrunn (Hellbrunn water park). More information available at: ...http://travel.yahoo.com/p-travelguide-2771237-salzburg_things_to_do-i

You can take a train out of Munich to a stop around the Ammersee, maybe about an hour??? There is a monastery there called Andechs that you hike up to the top and celebrate with a good beer and some biergartens up top. They serve a great dish of fish that is great for two, as well as many German dishes. The monaster goes back to 1455 and it is a great day trip. We have native family in Munich and they took us there last summer. It was great!

Out of Salzburg, take the train south to Hallein. Then take the bus towards the Hallein salt mines. You can stop at the salt mines or continue to Schoenau am Koenigsee in Germany and see the Nationalpark. There HAS to be some good hiking around there.

I will give you one disclaimer about my suggestion. I've never actually done this. You may not be able to take a bus from Hallein to Schoenau am Koenigsee. But you should be able to find information on getting to Schoenau am Koenigsee on the internet.
