Dachau from train station?/Munich ramblings

We ended up booking a slightly later flight into Munich than expected, and will only have Sunday afternoon and Monday before moving on. Dachau is a must for me, and since it's closed on Monday the only option I really have is going straight from the airport. I know it's been done, but my main question is what to do with bags. Is it best to take the train into the main Munich station and store bags there, or is there luggage storage at the Dachau station? I know a cab is faster from the sirport, and would allow me more time (the plane lands just before noon, and the memorial closes at 5, so it is a time crunch to say the least), but where would I leave bags if I took a cab? Any clue what I should budget for a cab? I hate rushing this and I'm sure I'll be exhausted from the flight, but Dachau is one thing I can't miss!

And while I'm at it... how long do most people end up spending at the Deutsches museum? I might need to plan for my engineer husband to just stay all day Monday while I wander town. Is a Third Reich tour worth the time/money? Can it be done better on my own, perhaps with a guide book, or is there really much of interest to see anyway?

(I teach a Holocaust literature unit with my 8th graders, hence the interest in Dachau and Third Reich.)

According to the station layout on the Bayern-Takt website, there are lockers at the Dachau station, but they don't say how many. It's not a very big station, and there might be a lot of people trying to use them.

Normally, if you take the S1 into town and change at Laim for an S2, direction Petershausen, it will take just under an hour to get to Dachau. If you decide to go to the Hbf to store your luggage, it will add about 20 minutes to your trip. That is, if you can get out of the S-Bahn station, to the lockers, and back to the S-Bahn station in about 14 minutes. Otherwise it will add 40 minutes to the trip and you will have 34 minutes to store your stuff.

OK, assuming you can't make the S-Bahn, lockers, S-Bahn connection in 14 minutes, it really doesn't matter which S-Bahn you take in from the airport (there are two lines, one coming into the city from the east, one from the west). If you take the S8, it will take 1h29m to Dachau and you will have 26 minutes to stow your stuff at the Hbf. If you take the S1, it will take 1h31m and you will have 34 minutes at the Hbf. The S1 & S8 leave alternately every 10 min from the airport, so just take the first one.

The nice thing is that when you come out of the S-Bahn station into the "main shed" area of the Hbf, the lockers are in a room right there on your left.

Bethany,

Lee has already provided an excellent description of the transportation from the airport. I suppose dropping your luggage at the Hotel and then going to Dachau would take too long? Could your husband take a Taxi to the Hotel (with the luggage) while you carry on straight-away to Dachau?

I'd like to provide some comments on the Deutsches Museum. There are about 16 kM of exhibits on several floors (not including the two satellite Museums), so it's possible to spend a LONG time there. You didn't indicate which "disciplines" your husaband was most interested in, but the Museum covers everything from astronomy to rockets!

You can reach the Musuem via Metro from the Hbf, but a short walk is necessary (across a bridge & then to the right as I recall).

I thought the Third Reich tour was worth the time and money, as it presented a good overview of the events that led to the origin of the Third Reich. Several historic sites are visited on the tour. As I recall, the large banquet room on the top floor of the Hofbrauhaus was one location that was used for speeches and rallies (the ceiling decorations surrounding the light fixtures were reportedly once swastikas, but these have been painted over). The tour that I took was led by a retired U.S. Army officer.

Given your VERY SHORT time in the Munich area, precise planning will be essential in order to see all the locations you want to see. If you want to take any of the tours in Munich, Radius Tours would be good as their office is in the Hbf (pre-booking would be a good idea).

One other point - when you arrive in the Munich Hbf, there's a Euraide office there that will be able to help with tickets and advice for the trip to Dachau. They speak English and I found them to be very helpful.

Happy travels!

Here is another company that does very good tours of Munich with a specialization on 3rd Reich info. You do have to make a reservation with them though. The tours are fascinating and because they are smaller than some of the other companies, you won't be in a huge group, therefore allowing more time for answering all of your questions.

Bethany, There is no lockers at Dachau station. We thought that they had some too, we looked around and never found them. We we're also coming from the airport, so we went to the hotel right in front of the station and we asked if they could keep our luggage for us for a few hours, they were very nice and they said, yes. You might want to try that, if not follow Lees instructions.
