We will be coming to Germany in May. We will be spending 2 days in Munich and 10 days in Fussen. We are cyclist at home and would like to make this a cycling vacation in the Fussen area. Does anyone know where I can find biking maps of this area and also what the terrain is like
The Bavarian Alps are a cyclist dream, but Fussen is perhaps the worst town to use as a base for this purpose. Fussen is a perfectly acceptable and convenient hub for visiting Ludwig's castles if you don't have a rental car. But the town is to Schwangau what Kissemee is to Disney World- and it exploits its proximity to Schwangau without shame. Although I wasn't specifically looking for bicycle trails as I passed through on the way to the castles, what struck me was the lack of cyclists compared to other Alpine towns. In this area, you'll have to share the road with an unending parade of daytrippers and tour buses from Munich.
Better options exist. Garmisch-Partenkirchen, at the end of the Alpenstrasse, has bike lanes throughout the town and several multi-purpose paved trails that ascend into the lower stretches of the surrounding mountains. I haven't seen them personally, but Mittenwald is supposedly bicyle friendly as well.
Trust me, Fussen's fine (cont)...
... for an overnight trip to the castles, but if you're going to spend 10 days in the Bavarian Alps, Fussen's a bit of a one-note town.
Oh, and the terrain- rolling hills to the north, towering mountains to the immediate south.
