We are currently in Switzerland and have decided at the last minute to go back to Murren and Gimmelwald (were there a number of years ago). We've seen Rick's references to cycling down from Gimmelwald, but don't have his book with us. The only reference I find is to mountainbiking down. I know there is no road open for tourists, but is it possible to cycle down the road to the Lauterbrunnen valley? We have our own bikes, and if necessary, will take the gondola down - we'll take the gondola (or whatever form it is now) up to Murren. Thanks for your help.

You can rent the bikes at the sports shop in Mürren. They will have route maps or instructions. The cycle route is signed ( with little bike symbols). I have seen them but do not recall if they follow the paved road from Mürren down to Gimmelwald. In any case you can definitely bike the road the rough the Lauterbrunnen Valley to take the cable car up from Lauterbrunnen.

The road is closed to motor vehicular traffic for the general public, not bicycles. If memory serves me correctly, the road descends from the southern edge of Gimmelwald and there are signs. I remember that the road is paved between Murren and Gimmelwald, but I don't remember if this is the case for the portion that descends from Gimmelwald to the valley floor.

Karen, Unless something has changed, this is easily possible. Have a look at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJsl0GvLJEk If you stop in the Sports Shop in Mürren, you should be able to obtain a Map and directions. One point to note - on the way back from Lauterbrunnen to Mürren, I believe the Funicular has been replaced by a Cable Car. Other than that, everything should be the same. Happy travels!

The funicular up to Grutschalp has indeed been replaced by a cablecar (late 2006). However you can take a bike onto the cablecar, or maybe they put it in the luggage basket. Either way you'll have no probelm getting the bike back up to Grutschalp. From there you can ride the level road the mile or so back to Mürren.
