Cute Swiss Village - Winterthur?

A few minutes ago there was a thread on here along the lines of "Cute Swiss Village within an hour of Zurich airport" or some such. I contributed to it as did several others, suggesting Stein am Rhein. It seems to have poofed into the ether. Shame. But that's not my question. Lee posted that he thought Winterthur would work well having looked at the town's website.
I thought that too, either two or three years ago. Various things about it seem nice and it is very convenient. We stayed there for, I think, 4 nights - at the Ibis just out of the centre. Ibis was as Ibis is, but we were completely underwhelmed by the town. The teenagers racing their cars on the streets, broken car glass in various places around town, and police tape surrounding the McDonalds which stayed closed the duration of our stay all made us feel less comfortable than we have anywhere else in many, many trips to Switzerland. We wouldn't recommend the town nor will we return. Maybe it was a one off, probably was, but we will return to our other favourite places in Switzerland. You may ask why we went, and why we didn't leave early. We have done so many touristy things in Switzerland over the years we now go to a Canton we are not familiar with and see what things are there. We were happy to continue doing that, never felt personally threatened, and were careful with our car. So we we stayed....

Hi Nigel--- interesting observations, and well worth posting as a caution. Newcomers to Switzerland who go for the postcard scenery are sometimes surprised to find that it has a grittier side as well. What happened to the other thread?

Winterthur is a dumpy place in an overpriced country. If I'm gonna pay Swiss prices, I'm going to stay somewhere nicer. For getting to Zurich airport, Stein am Rhein is indeed a good choice. Schaffhausen works too and is even faster. Waldshut, with its extra nice shopping/old town area, and Singen in Germany are also decent options, just over an hour by train.
