Customs in Amsterdam or Berlin

Our flight from Atlanta has a 1 1/2 hour layover in Amsterdam before heading to our final destination of Berlin. Since Berlin is our final stop, is that where we will go through customs?

If your bags are checked through to Berlin, that is where you will see them and go through customs, which is now merely a formality. If you carry-on, in Amsterdam you will be given the option of going through customs, but one line will say "nothing to declare", and you will pass through.

Just go from your arrival flight to your departure flight without back tracking. There is an immigrations check between some of the terminals at the Amsterdam airport which you may pass through if you wander around and back track. Edwin

We're not carrying our luggage on, it is being checked through to Berlin but we will have a small carry on bag each. If we have that do we have to go through customs? We've never been in the Amsterdam airport much less had connecting flights in Europe (we've always flown direct) so I wasn't sure what we had to do. Our connecting flight home is through JFK. I assume we have to go through customs there since that is our first point of entry into the US??

You will go through immigration in Amsterdam and through customs in Berlin. There will be two gates: one with red line if you have something to declare and one with green line if you have nothing to declare. I never saw anybody stopped at the green light in my 20 something trips to Europe, yet.
