Hi I've seen previous comments about the state of Baden W autobahns. I'm putting together a little road trip towards southwest Germany in the next few days. Are either the A3 or A6 a complete loss? Thanks guys...
There's usually heavy traffic on A3, but it keeps moving. As for A6, on the west side of the Rhine, there's a lot of construction, but it only seems to slow to a crawl around Kaiserslautern. After it crosses the Rhine, there's no road work going on until after the Waldorf interchange. Between here and Heilbron, there's a few stretches of road work, but traffic is manageable. I haven't driven any further east along A6 after the A81 interchange. The really awful roads to avoid right now are A5 between Heidelberg and Freiburg and A8 between Karlsruhe and Ulm. I just can't figure it out. About half the length of the roads in these areas seem to be under construction, but I haven't seen any visible progress in over a year. What should be about a 90 minute drive along these roads between where I live and Stuttgart has taken me greater than 3 hours on occasion. PS- The traffic conditions are one the reasons I frequently advise people against driving out of their way to visit Baden-Baden.
Thanks Tom Shame about the road to Freiburg. I guess if we stay on the French side until Colmar. My memory is the road from Colmar into Germany isn't too bad. I thought we might run down to Schaffhausen so I hope Freiberg to Titisee to Bonndorf to Stuehlingen will work or Titisee to Huefingen to Blumberg and in. Thanks for the help.
Actually, I was using Freiburg sort of as an estimation. Driving south on A5, there is a point at which the seemingly endless succession of Baustellen ends. That point occurs somewhere about an hour or so south of Baden-Baden, I just forget where exactly.
