Curious about showers

In general, when renting a hotel room how can you tell if the shower is a tub/shower combo or a stand alone shower? Accessibility is the issue....the walls of French/European tubs seem so much higher than U.S. tubs.

Many websites show photos of the rooms. If there are no photos, you could probably contact them by email to ask.

Our experience with 2 and 3 star hotels is almost always a stand alone shower, no tub. The only way to know for sure is ask the hotel.

Many times the room description will distinguish between "shower" (the stand-alone kind) and "bath" (the tub/shower combo.)

My experience with 2and3star hotels has been the opposite of Franks. We have always had a tub with a shower in it with a half door. They have been nice, but you are right.......sometimes it is very high to step in. The ones we have had however have a grab bar.

We've stayed in several high-end hotels that had only a tub with a hand-held shower. There's no way to know based on stars or price. Even if you see a stand alone shower in a photo on their website doesn't mean you'll get that room. As others have suggested, best to talk to/email the hotel and make sure your room will have what you need.

I have noticed that many times it will clearly state "shower only" often in the cheaper room, with a more expensive being the shower/tub.
I usually try to get the shower only rooms, the bathrooms are sometimes a tad spacier without a tub, plus tub shower combos are often tub and hand held showerhead, and I really really hate hotel tubs, wouldn't sit in them if given a choice,, i think maids use the same rag to clean them all, and eww.. they just aren't clean enough for my tender tush, lol So the answer seems to be there is no consistancy , just ask.

I concur that there is no way to determine based on star ratings. Other than emailing to the hotel itself, tripadvisor usually has lots of photos posted. You'll often find shots of the bathrooms.

My own experience is that when the room description says shower, it's just a shower and a small one at that in France...larger in other places. When it says shower or bath, it's a tub with a shower hose attachment, but there may be no shower curtain in France...makes for a pretty wet WC...other places have had shower doors. I haven't had a room that was described as just bath, but my guess it that it would be a tub only set-up with no shower hose attachment. And I'm with Pat...no way I want to get down into a hotel tub...nasty. Just ask when you make an inquiry...easy to do.

Even in the US you can't be sure what you will get, based on a description. I recently stayed in a high-end hotel in Chicago where the room was described as having a shower. (Other, higher-level rooms were described as having both a bath and shower.) When I got to my room, I actually did have a tub/shower combo.
