crime in Madrid & Seville

Many of the guidebooks warn about pickpockets, robberies and muggings in major tourist areas of these cities, even in broad daylight. Is the problem really that bad, and what can I do to avoid being a crime victim? I frequently pull out my map and guidebook (e.g., doing the walking tours), so it's obvious I'm a tourist. (Going there in early November.)

Carolyn, this recent topic (http://www.ricksteves.com/graffiti/helpline/index.cfm/rurl/topic/7191/crime-in-barcelona.html) covers the same question, and the information is equally valid for Madrid or Seville.

Above all, relax, enjoy your trip, and don't worry about becoming a target. While it is true that maps and guidebooks will identify you as a tourist, as savvy thief will also recognize you as such for your hair, clothes, etc. Nothing much you can do about that. Spain has very little in the way of violent crime, but pickpockets can be a pain. Use the street smarts you've acquired from your life in the DC area and you'll be fine.

Carolyn, My husband and I were there 2 years ago in March. I too was freaking out thinking the worse. Its not different than any big city. Be safe by being aware of where you are. Stay with people, in well lighted areas, and take a cab if you are unsure.

The pickpocket occurs if you are in a crowded touristy area. IF you make sure to keep your valuables in the hotel safe, and take only what you need, it will be ok.

Madrid is beautiful!! I can't wait to return.
I have not been to Seville but hope to soon!

PS: look at maribelsguide.com for ideas on where to go. Fantastic guide in addition to Rick's!
