credit cards accepted: Visa - Eurocard / Mastercard ??

A hotel I will be visiting says this on its website. Does it mean that the Visa card must be a Europe-issued card?

No, "Eurocard" is just the brand name for Mastercard in Europe. So they accept Visa and Mastercard. It doesn't matter where your card was issued.

I believe Mastercard in Europe is Maestro card. Eurocard is something else, a debit card only issued by European banks. There might be some kind of agreement between the two now, but I have seen hotels say that they accept Eurocard, but do not say that they accept Mastercard. It might be that Mastercard is accepted some places in Europe only as a debit card (meaning the funds are taken from you account immediately) but not as a credit card. In the US, debit cards pay the banks about 20¢ per transaction rather then the 4% they get per CC transaction. If it is also true in Europe, merchants might be reluctant to accept Mastercard as a credit card, because it cost them more. Up date: The website for Eurocard is at www.eurocardinternational.com. It show a card with "EUROCARD" printed at the top in large letters. On the lower right is the Mastercard symbol. Elsewhere on the site it says you have 65 days to pay, so it must be a credit card. Per their website, "Eurocard ... is currently available on 13 markets throughout Europe." So apparently we cannot get one (for the Chip & Pin). However, the annual fee starts at almost $100 (in Euro) so you might as well get the Chase card.
