Credit Card or Debit Card?

We will be in France, Germany and Italy in May. What is the best and safest way to pay for expenses (lodging, food, entrance fees)? Credit Card? Cash Advance? Debit Card? Thanks for your advice.

Typically, you would want to be able to cash from an ATM (hence an ATM or debit card with a four digit numeric pin tied to the checking account you want to withdraw from) and if needed to pay with a credit card for larger expenses. Hard to really provide details since you did not specified what the hotel (lodging) takes, whether you already have purchased transportation between cities, etc. Edwin PS - I typically pay cash for everything except for an occassional hotel, prepurchased or internet purchased train tickets, and big ticket souvniers.

Donna, The "best and safest way to pay for expenses" will vary depending on the circumstances. I usually pay for Hotels with a credit card, unless they request cash or provide a discount for cash payments. I normally use cash for meals and incidentals such as entrance fees. The easiest, simplest and cheapest way to obtain cash in via ATM's. DO NOT use Cash Advances from your credit card, as high interest charges start accruing as soon as the money is withdrawn. I'd suggest taking two ATM cards, in case there are any difficulties with the primary card. Note that your travel funds must usually be in a chequing account with a four-number PIN. At least one credit card is also a good idea. Prior to departure, BE SURE to notify all card issuers that you'll be travelling in Europe, so they don't "freeze" your cards when they notice the change in usage patterns. You may also wish to contact your Bank to review your daily withdrawal limits from ATM's (note that these limits may be slightly different when in Europe).

A debit card is a doorway to your bank account. You want to limit debit card use to ATMs. If you need to use a card, it should be a credit card for purchases.

Cash is king in Europe. It is rare for a hotel not to give a discount for cash. In our last two trips (about 40 days) we have charged three items. One was a hotel that would not give a discount for cash. We easier and to a degree, safer to use cash for nearly everything. A debit card with no fees is the best way to obtain cash anywhere.
