Cotes du Rhone Wineries: Gigondas or Chateauneuf du Pape

We are planning on visiting Provence, and we cannot decide which wine region to visit, Gigondas or Chateauneuf du Pape. I am a wine enthusiast and I love discovering great wines for under $15. Additionally, our kids would really enjoy a scenic tour.

We were planning on doing a half day trip with Mike Rijken (http://www.winesafari.net). Can anyone recommend a wine region and domaine?

Thank You.

Chateauneuf du Pape is one of the world's premier reds, and the only red they sell under $15 is a blend called Pere Anselm, which isn't worth the money. The Cave for tasting is very nice, and, if they have any, you could score a white which I have never found in the US close to that price level.
Gigondas has a wide variety at several price levels, from a Chateauneuf on down in quality, however, the real secret is to get lost with a local Cave list and you can find some surprises. check around Nimes or Utz to create your personal tour.
Bon Chance!

I agree that Gigondas is much more affordable than Chateauneuf du Pape.

Mas de la Dame which is outside Les Baux is worth visiting and I loved Mourchon outside Seguret which is in a very scenic area.

Enjoy!

If you can, at least drive through Chateauneuf. It's a unique wine growing area with the vines sprawled on cobbles. (Incidentally, it also produces whites, many of which you can find at reasonable prices in the U.S._

You can do a lot of tasting in the town but, alas, it is an expensive appellation. I agree that you'll find more variety in Gigondas.

Gigondas comes in two styles: lighter and more full-bodied. The full-bodied are best if over about 7-8 years of age and, in general, the price will be related to age. You (the OP) mentioned lower price being a factor, so with Gigondas you might want to go with the lighter style.

Well known producers of Gigondas include: Domaine Les Goubertsas well as tastings at Caveau du Gigondas

Gigondas and Châteauneuf are only 15 minutes apart. You can easily check out both villages and throw in Vacqueyras while you are at it. Plenty of excellent wines to be found in all three appelations for 10-12 euros, though especially in Châteauneuf, they can go a lot higher.

As mentioned, the Cave in the center of Gigondas is a great stop.

I did this tour with Mike Rijken. You will likely get to taste both unless you are specifing a private tour.

We sampled both wines and in addition - visited the ruins of the Papal summer palace where Chateauneuf du Pape began.

You really don't have to choose one or the other.
