My bride-to-be and I are taking a European Honeymoon. 3 weeks. Starting in London to Paris to Cinque Terre to somwhere in the Cote d'Azur (Nice, Antibes, Cannes) but then I have hit a stumbling block. I planned on the Cote du Rhone for two nights with one night in Arles before heading south to the Costa Brava. Now, after finding many nice villages in the hills of Luberon while looking for quaint but not budget breaking accomodations, I am second-guessing myself. Cote du Rhone village or Luberon village? We aren't exactly wine afficianados, so our real goal is to stay in a Provencal village, and drive to see a couple more surrounding villages. Thoughts on where to stay? Thanks!!!!
I wanted to bunp your question up to get some more responses.
We stayed a week on the Cote du Rhone last summer and loved it - near the village of Crestet, a bit south of Vaison la Romain. We drove the circular route one day to see the rest of the villages. Another day we drove a route around the Luberon. We enjoyed that, too, and they are pretty close together. So I don't think you need to sweat the difference too much.
It was my impression that the villages on the Luberon were a bit more touristy than the Cote, if that makes any difference.
I would suggest Googling several town names and clicking on "images" in the upper left to see some photos to see if anything catches your eye. You can also try YouTube to see if anyone put their vacation videos up there to watch.
But really, as long as you pick a place that has gotten some good pub in the guide books and is in a handy location, you can't really go wrong. Every village has its good points.
Lars, I agree with Randy, you can't go wrong whichever you choose. I love Vaison la Romaine and recommend Le Beffroi in the medieval section. Family run, wonderful hotel, not too expensive, great views. I've also stayed in and loved Lourmarin which is one of the more southern Luberon towns. Even if you decide to stay in one of the Luberon village, Vaison is worth a stop and a couple of hours wandering about the upper village.
Enjoy and congratulations on your marriage!
Thanks! I think I just needed my thinking backed by somebody that has been there before. Now its just a matter of finding a hotel with a room available!
