Côte d'Azur - Stay in Nice and return to Paris

I am planning to be in Nice mid of Feb 09 and would like some recommendations for

  1. Hotel in Nice that is good and reasonable in the sub Euro$100 for 3 nights as a based for Cannes and Monaco.
  2. Transport between Nice, Cannes and Monaco
  3. Must see places
  4. Cheapest and fastest way from Nice to Paris.

Thanks

  1. The hotel I've stayed in has closed so I don't have any personal recommendations.

  2. There is frequent cheap train service from Nice to either Cannes or Monaco. You could also take a bus.

  3. What are your interests (museums, churches, hilltop villages, etc.)?

  4. easyJet is a budget airline that flies from Nice to both CDG and Orly. If you book now, you can get a fare as low as €27.99. The direct night train takes 12 hours, but you save the cost of a night in a hotel and have more daylight hours for sightseeing. Daytime TGVs make the trip in 5 1/2 - 6 hours.

Although you didn't name specific interests, I'll give you my art lover's "must see" recommendations: the Chagall and Matisse museums in Nice and the Picasso museum in Antibes. The Russian Orthodox cathedral in Nice is considered to be the finest of its kind outside of Russia.

You could combine a trip to Monaco with one to the hilltop Eze-le-Village. Take the train from Nice to Monaco. Take a bus from Monaco to Eze and again from Eze to Nice.

If you buy tickets on regional trains to Cannes and back, you could stop off in Antibes either going or coming at no additional charge.

We stay in Villefranche-sur-mer, just around the bend from Nice (not even a 10 min bus ride). Also on the train route to Monaco. Last year on our fourth visit paid 65 Euros per night in high season. Really nice little hotel for the price, excellent English spoken, good breakfast (extra), easy to find at the bottom of the hill directly in front of the old harbour (Darse). Can't say enough good things about this hotel, one of Rick's picks. Make sure you walk thru the very old part of Villefranche, and if you go to Eze-le-Village, climb up to the botanical gardens for some of the best views in Europe!
