Any suggestions as to staying on the beach in Nice or a small boutique hotel in St. Paul de Vence (just outside) for a base? I will have a car.

We stayed at the Hotel Le Royal in Nice last fall for one night and had a great view of the Med. It was our last night in France and we sat on the balcony and had a picnic and watched the sunset and people go by. Parking was about a block away. I would not drive in Nice without a GPS.

You might have a look at the Hotel Suisse which is right across the street from the beach. Some of the rooms on the front have an incredible view down the "Promenade des Anglais" and the beach. It's an easy walk from the Hotel to "the old town" and lots of great restaurants and street markets.
I'm not sure whether they offer a car park though (I try to avoid renting cars except for specific circumstances).

I would not recommend the Villa Eden. Thia is the only recommendation of Rick's that we didn't agree with. Really old, dirty, gross. Yes it had a view of the sea but it was nasty. It was to be our 2 night splurge but we checked out after 1 night.

We also stayed at the Rick recommended Hotel Le Royal and have friends who stayed there and enjoyed it. Right on the beach on Promenade des Anglais and reasonable rates, great view.
