We will be visiting the port of Marseilles for one day on Nov. '11 and would like some tips/advise on how to get around into the city's local attractions and points of interest. Have read that from where the cruise ships dock, it is far from "old port" area.
Can you walk or get around by public or port buses? Are the cruise tours worth the $$$?
Hi Nelson Since you don't have any answers yet, you may find that if you delete this post (or edit it) but turn off the caps lock key and put up the post in normal type you will get many more answers. Many of the volunteers on this Helpline switch off when they see all caps. It is considered shouting.
You might try the boards at www.cruisecritic.com. Cruises are all they do there, and there is a huge amount of information there. Most of the regulars here travel independently or on RS tours, not so much cruises.
All my notices have been corrected, taking into consideration your recomendation. Thanks for the advise.
As Nancy says (see her post above) cuisecritic.com is the place to go for answers. Click onto "ports" and you will get more than you need about Marseilles.
You should get Rick's new book on cruise ports. http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/rick-steves-mediterranean-cruise-ports-rick-steves/1100050663?ean=9781598808360&itm=1&usri=rick%2bsteves%2bcruise%2bports
The cruise ships dock in the north of Marseille, and organise coaches to take passengers into the town centre (next to the Old Port). The tourist info office is right next to there as well. There is a little road train that takes visitors around to see the main attractions (notably Notre Dame de la Garde which is at the top of a hill), and open top double decker buses for sight seeing. I am pretty sure that before arriving at the port of Marseille the cruise company will give you detailed info about what to see and how to get there.
I'll third the recommendation for cruisecritic's message boards. You can find information about each port, as well as "Roll Calls" for your specific cruise which will allow you to meet up with others on your cruise and arrange small group tours if you'd like. To quote Ian: "I am pretty sure that before arriving at the port of Marseille the cruise company will give you detailed info about what to see and how to get there." This isn't true. The cruse company will give you information about their excursions, but rarely ever detailed information that includes using public transportation. Although we used a line other than Costa, there were many people onboard our Med cruise earlier this year scrambling for information because they couldn't get it out of the staff.
I will second Dina that the cruise company wants you to take their organized tour because that is how they make their money. Again, the cruise company guides get commissions from the stores that take you to. Good for you for seeking out the information on your own.
