Hi, My boyfriend and I are planning a trip September 24th-October 6th. We cannot decide if we should drive up the coast from Barcelona toward Begur and the French border, or drive around Tuscany to the coast. We haven't been to either Several years ago, we did a trip through the Luberon (Provence) to Cinque Terre and it was magnificent. We are in our 30's, but we live hectic lives in NYC and we are fans of rural off-the-beaten-path places. We like to talk to locals, etc. Any ideas? Thank you!!!!
Jamie - thanks for posing an unanswerable question <g> - both of your options will lead to spectacular travel adventures. So here's my two cents: we just got back from Costa Brava and So. France and it was a five star trip. Not surprisingly, Barcelona is one of our all-time favorite big city stays (min.4 nites (I wish I had had the time to stay an extra day or two in Barcelona)). Now assuming that you are renting a car, I'd suggest using Calella de Parafrugel as a base for then next 4 days (i.e.,Girona, a Dali-quest in Pubol, Figueres, Cadaques). Lastly, move on to Colillure and soak in the France side of Catalonia; again there are a number day trips from Colillure. I'll leave the Italian recommendations to other posters (but, please note in our four trips to Italy/Tuscanny/Umbria we NEVER been disappointed (and RS does such a good job detailing the small towns of Tuscanny).
Safe travels and Ciao.
