Any idea how much gas costs in germany?
The news yesterday morning said it was about a buck eighty-five per liter in most of western europe. Don't know how they come up with the numbers; supermarkets are cheaper, freeways are more.
Seven dollars a gallon is blowing my rule of thumb about 2.5 times what it is around the corner all to heck.
I'm confused, so correct me if I'm wrong.
Wouldn't 143.0 euros per liter come to about $700 per gallon???
you need to get used to the fact that Germans use a "," in place of the decimal point "."
No. I know that a comma is used in place of a decimal point. I was referring to 143.0 euros per liter...
LD, that should be 143.0 euro cent per liter.
Bad survey in June, apparently. Darn internet!
Car outing from Munich to Bamberg for 2-5 people:
460 km round trip, probably a minimum of 80-90 Euros for gas alone.
Train outing from Munich to Bamberg for 2-5 people:
Total cost, 28 Euros on a "Bayern Ticket" daypass.
About 80 euros for 15 gallons.
In a semi-fuel efficient car (30 miles/gal) -- about 4 hours of driving on the autobahn or 500 km/300 miles.
I highly recomend the train for local access or transport between cities for 2 or less people. On the other hand, in some cases it can actually be cheaper to rent a car and drive if you add the costs of the tickets up between cities.
Do remember that driving in Germany involves a lot more rules and signs -- be sure to study up on the signs. Being allowed to drive in Germany means that you are acknowledging that you know the traffic laws.

???? this might be true if you were driving a SUV or a similar gas guzzling vehicle. But those are hard to find in Europe - for a good reason. Rent the smallest car that fits your group, reserve a model with a diesel engine and the calculation looks very different. Most will get well over 1000 km out of one tank of gas and diesel itself is cheaper than regular gas or "Super". A 460 km round trip in a car that needs 7liters/100km would cost you:
7 x 4.6 x 1.19 Euro = 38.32 Euro
For a short regional daytrip that is still more than your DB Laenderticket but on longer distances the car can be quite a bit cheaper, especially if more than 2 people travel together.
Of course you have to add parking cost to this equation and in some cities like Munich that may come quite as a shock to you. Unless you live in Calgary and know how to budget for parking cost ...
