My two adult daughters and I are planning a 3-night trip to Ajaccio for this May. We'll be taking the ferry from Nice and returning to Marseille on the fourth night. Any suggestions for best ferry company, ways to get around w/o a car (tours?), favorite hotels, restaurants, activities? Thanks!
Darcy, Ajaccio is a very big and busy city. It's by far not the nicest or most exciting place on Corsica. Calvi would be a much better destinantion, which you can also reach by ferryboat from Nice, Marseilles and Toulon. Calvi has got a great walled old town, a romantic and charming old harbor where you can have dinner and drinks in (that's where the nightlife is) and the greatest sandy beaches. There is an old railroad that connects Calvi with the hinterlands and other cities, like Bastia, so that you can take very exciting day tours. As to ferry boat companies: If you can avoid the French SNCM monopoly company and rather take Corsicaferries.com, then do so. But of course you'd also survive a trip on an SNCM vessel ;-)...
Andreas, thank you SO much for so much information! This definitely helps me make several decisions in my planning and will result in a fantastic trip. Thank you!
