Can anyone please give me some advice as to which city or town to make a base for a visit to Corsica. I'm planning for a trip in May 2008 and need to come up with some good ideas. I would like to stay in one town and make day trips etc. I will probably stay 3-4 nights, but I am flexible at this stage of planning. As much advice as you can give as far as town, hotels, day trips, and connections from Sardinia. Thanks
The beauty of Corsica is its wild-ness. The price you've got to pay for that is that no single town allows you access to the entire island. You'd have to pick two towns as bases, one for the north, one for the south. Generally speaking its west coast is much, much more exciting than its east cost. The west cost is steep, comes with many fjords, mountains etc. The east coast is flat and that's the only place for industry and agriculture. Calvi is a gem in the northern half, the old town, the castle, the beautiful bay. You need to do a day trip the the fango river from there. Nowhere else have I ever seen such a great river where you can swim, dive (!) and jump into from steep rocks etc. I can't explain how great it is. Also 3-4 nights is NOT enough to explore the entire island. I recommend you focus on one region. In the south Ajaccio or Bonifacio are good headquarters. Ajaccio is a big big city whereas Bonifacio is a beautiful little town with a natural harbor.
