For 35 euros, I can take the a.m. ferry from Nice to Illes Rousse or Calvi and have four hours there before returning on the outward bound ferry. is this worthy the ferry time?

Illes Rousse is smaller and more tidy. Calvi is rather blah to grubby. I couldn't think of much to do in either to kill four hours. Plus, I think the trip is a good five hours each way.
Bastia is pretty nice and could entertain you for a half day, but I think those ferries only leave from Italy.
