Corsica

My wife has a trip to Florence in May. We've visited Italy a number of times so I was thinking of taking a boat/ferry to Corsica & spending a week there. Was inspired by the recent kevin Kline movie filmed there about the chess player...Any thoughts on Corsica?

Yes! Go!!! I decided during my visit to Corsica that I would love to retire there! Granted, I am only 26 years old, but I fell in love with it. Corsica is beautiful and they are very proud people. I also thought that they were very friendly people as well. We went in April of 2009 right before the tourist season and we loved it. It was beautiful. To really experience Corsica, I would suggest renting a car only because it doesn't seem well connected by public transportation. We flew into Bastia and out of Calvi. We made Calvi our lodging point during our stay. Driving's an experience, but you also get to see some sights that you never would have seen taking the train. We would make several stops just to sit in the mountains and soak up the atmosphere. Also, don't forget to try Corsica's "Coke." Yes, they have their own version.

Excellent idea!! Corsica is very beautiful. Portovecchio, Porto, Calvi, Ile Rousse St-Florent, Bonifacio, all worth it!

So you'll probably take a ferry boat from Livorno to Bastia. Mobylines.com offer that 4 hours crossing at affordable fares (if booked a bit in advance). While Bastia is nice it's not one of your highlights of the island. Take the train to Calvi from there. The train ride alons is a great experience. IMO Calvi is one of the best places to stay. It has great beaches but also an old fortress, a great harbor with typical mediterranean night life (quite unique I would say), plenty of decent restaurants and is still rustique and authenic Corsian. Also there are some great short and long distances hikes on the island.
