Corsica

We want to visit Corsica for 2 nights. It seems rather daunting to take the ferry from Nice. Any suggestions about how to do this? Should we go by foot or take a car? Is it train friendly if we don't have a car? Thanks for your help.

Patty, Corsica is to be avoided in July and August, esp. with a car. Plus ferry reservations are mandatory. The coastal road is a parking lot at that time! 2 days is very short to see Corsica... If you go in May-June or Sept.-Oct, for 2 days, I would take the ferry and spend the 2 nights in Ile Rousse (direct ferry from Nice) and in Saint Florent (ferry Bastia). You will definitely not have the time to get to Bonifacio. Take a bus between the two & shuttle / bus to Bastia. If you are continuing to Italy after Corsica, you can take the ferry direct from Bastia to Livorno, close to Pisa (and Lucca).

If you can only afford to spend two days on Corsica you'd really have to know where you're going. It's hard to see such a beautiful but widespread place in such short time. If it has to be in two days either see Calvi (in the North-West) or Bonifacio (in the South). There are direct ferries to Calvi from several places in France and Italy. Consider taking a night ferry to maximize the time you can spend on the island. Ferry lines are SNCM, Corica Ferries and Moby Lines. One of many sources to search for ferries are directferries.com ( UK for English, then you can the ferry routes). Trains cover Corsica as well as they cover the North of Canada. There is a train route from Calvi to Bastia which is quite scenic. But that's about it (there's also one into the hinterlands which is breathtaking but takes forever).
