Cooking class in Paris at a reasonable cost?

Hi from Down Under,

My family of 5 will be visiting Paris 13-19th August, 2009, staying at Marais, and my teenage daughters and I would love to do a half day french cooking class that won't cost the earth. Can anyone reccommend any?

Many thanks in advance.

Ok, ssshhh, don't tell anyone I told you this. We contacted the Cordon Bleu school and made a college visit. My daughter was 15 and interested in culinary school. They were very nice. We talked a bit to an employee there, and did a brief tour of the school. No classes, but seeing it was fun. I do think you can take just a casual class there without trying to get a diploma, but I don't know if you can just take one class. It might disturb their notion of doing things the French way.

I would reccomend A World in a Pan. The class is done within the teacher's Parisian home and is around $80/person. The class I took we prepared a full meal and then sat down and enjoyed it together.

Hi,
There are cooking classes from 17 euros (up to 80 euros, depending if you're on a quick or full meal class) run in some department stores, the trick is that they are in French and you have to book in French. If that's not a problem this is the site: http://www.atelierdeschefs.com. Or if you search Google for "Cooking with the Countess Paris" you should find an English cooking class run by... a Countess in her Montmartre palace.

BTW if you haven't read Julia Child's My Life in France, you should. It's a wonderful book about how she ended up a chef and her experiences in France. It's marvelous. Pam
