Convenient Hotel to Tegel Airport Berlin

Try the Dorint Airport Hotel... it's less than 5 minutes from the airport by car/cab and very convenient. The planes take off right nearby, but we found the rooms to be perfectly quiet.

I've only been to Berlin a few times, so I defer to those with more experience. But Tegel is not far from the city center(s). On my last trip, it was only a 15-20 minute cab ride to my hotel in Mitte (near Prenzlauer Berg), and about the same from my hotel in Charlottenburg (near Zoo station). If your flight leaves at 9:30, you'll want to be at the airport by 8 (earlier if it's nonstop to the US). Meaning, you should be at the airport before the worst of rush hour. So, in your situation, I'd just stay in a hotel in a more central area, where that night you can walk around, have dinner, etc. Then, take a cab to Tegel the next morning.

Yes, the Dorint really is off the main roads and not subject to a lot of traffic. However, it's in a commercial area. There is absolutely nothing nearby. For dinner you'd have to take a cab into the city center and back. There is also the Mercure Airport Hotel Tegel (ca. €99 per night) which is almost at the main entrance to the airport. The Holiday Inn Berlin City West (at Siemensstadt) is also not subject to too much traffic. Do avoid any of the many hotels just North of the airport. You'd have to go through the tunnel underneath the runways which is the main bottle neck for North to South traffic in that area during commute hours.

I second Harold. There's a direct bus to the airport that leaves from the Hauptbahnhof as well, if you don't want to pay for a cab. You should be OK leaving between 6:30 and 7am from anywhere in central Berlin.

Iliana, It's on Invalidenstraße right outside of Berlin Hbf. where you catch the TXL bus direct to Tegel.
