We are looking for concerts or music that won't break the bank in Vienna around the first of July. Has any one experienced this. If so, how was it.
All the top-tier ensembles (ie, the expensive ones) are either on vacation or touring in July. What remains are usually the semi-professional student groups and the Mozart-wig orchestras. These are aimed at tourists and usually pretty cheap. There's nothing wrong with them, except that they all play the same limited repetoire. Expect to hear a lot of "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" and "The Four Seaons".
These summer touristy concerts are fun, though, and the venues can be hard to beat. We went to a Strauss/Mozart concert at the Hofburg. I think the orchestra was called the "Vienna Hofburg Orchestra"...not bad, and you are in an amazing palace. The place will be sold out with tourists...huge bus groups...still, I would recommend it...a lot of fun. You'll even get to join in on the Radetzky March. For regular folks who can't really discern a difference b/n professional (like your home city symphony) and touristy orchestras, it's a great evening. I was with 2 musicians, and they still had a good time.
This information is very helpful. Thanks,
