Combining Gimmelwald with France

I am doing a trip from Paris to Barcelona (3 weeks trveling thoruhg France capped off by a week in Barcelona). I am thinking about including Switzerland, specifically Gimmelwald, into my trip. I had already planned on spending two nights in Chamonix to satisfy my Alp wonder. I was wondering if Gimmelwald can be done easily from Chamonix and if it is going to fit into my budget. Thanks!

I'm going to commit a Rick Steve's heresy, but there's nothing in Gimmelwald that you can't see in the French Alps. To answer your questions specifically, no, the Berner Oberland is not conveniently located to Chamonix (think of all the times people have assumed to you that Pittsburg and Philadelphia are conveniently located to each other).

I don't know your budget, but I'll say this. Switzerland is by far the most expensive country in Europe, so if cutting costs is a concern, best to cut Switzerland all together.

Colmar, France is lovely and from there the drive south into the heart of Switzerland is easy. Stay in Mürren and hike to Gimmelwald. Then drive from there, past Geneva, into France to the cute town of Annecy. From there Provence is an easy drive. Expensive, yes, but not bad for a short stay.

Thanks for the help guys! I think I'm going to keep my Alp experience in France.

Does 2 nights in Chamonix sound sufficient?

Depends on what you had planned and depends on if the weather cooperates.

2 nights, meaning one full day, in the Alps is always iffy. What if it rains all day? No views. The weather is so changable, it's nice to have a few days so that you have a better chance of good weather.

I would skip Gimmelwald this trip(too far) and stay in Chamonix. We were in Chamonix last July for 4 nights, it rained and snowed part of time so you never know about weather but it is beautiful. Book your lodging asap if you are planning on this summer it fills fast.
Definately plan Lauterbrunnen Valley and Gimmelwald areas for another trip it also is gorgeous and should not be missed by those that love the alpine areas.
