Hi! I will be travelling from Amsterdam to Berlin as part of my Europe trip. I would like to make a stop in between, and it occurred to me that I could stop in Cologne or in Bremen. Which city would you pick to expend just a few hours? Any other suggestion?
Thanks!
I think Cologne (Köln) has more of what tourists want to see, but from the standpoint of efficiency, Bremen is more on the way to Berlin; Köln is kind of a detour.
Have a look at the pictures on www.bremen.de and on www.koeln.de/Cologne_tourist_information .It's hard to tell because Cologne is a +1M people city whereas Bremen is a smaller city. Cologne has got this unique cathedral which is a must-see. Bremen has got its lovely old town with narrow streets... Cologne as party capital is only 2nd to Berlin... Bremen is not a party city at all.
If you've only got a few hours, it is Cologne without question.
Cologne has a compact area of must-see tourist sites right around the iconic cathedral. As such it is a worthwhile stop, even if you've only got 3 or 4 hours to be there.
Bremen is a site in itself -- the point of going to Bremen is to slow down and soak up the feel of being German for several days. There isn't a big "I was in Bremen" toursit site, and the character of this city can't be appreciated in a few hours, so it only makes sense as part of a longer, slower, stop.
Cologne.
