Hello We are a family of 4 from Australia and have 3 nights near Colmar. Thinking of travelling to Switzerland by regional train on one of those days but not sure where would be good for day trip (hopefully get to go up to Alps). Any suggestions? thanks

It is a 3-hour trip to Interlaken Ost, with a single change of trains at Basel. At Interlaken Ost, you would take the train to Lauterbrunnen (in a beautiful valley) and then you could ride a train and/or cablecar to either Mürren or Wengen to visit a nice alpine village with spectacular views. Above Wengen there is a lovely walk, accessed by cablecar and train. It would take you about 4 hours to reach either of these villages for you ralpine experience, so it would be a long day (but fun, with lots of transport variety). An native would be to head to Luzern, which is 2 hours 12 minutes from Colmar, also with a single change at Basel. At Luzern, you can walk around the charming town, and then ride a boat and cogwheel train up Mt. Pilatus for spectacular views, or ride a boat and cablecar and cogwheel train for a loop on Mt. Rigi. There are nice walks on Rigi, again with beautiful views over the lake to the Alps. You are not "in" the Alps as you would be at Wengen or Mürren, but you will have equally stunning views (absent the hanging glaciers).
Thanks for info Lola Sounds like a possibility although long day....would you need to book train passes etc ahead or suggest swiss rail pass. If we don't need to that is good also! Have also heard that Bernina Express leaves from Chur but sounds like that would definitely be back tracking from Italy and need overnight stay somewhere. regards
